Graduation Requirements

There are four (4) graduation requirement areas; Credits, Graduation Pathway, High School and Beyond Plan, and Senior Project.

Here are the Credit Requirements:  

• Communications/English — 4 Credits
  • English 9
  • English 10
  • English 11
  • English 12

 

• Mathematics — 3 Credits
  • Algebra
  • Geometry
  • Junior Year Math
  • Senior Year Math
    • Senior year math is listed for college/university requirements and for meeting math state testing requirements.

 

• Science — 3 Credits
  • 2.0 credits must be from a lab science

 

• Social Studies/History — 3 Credits
  • World History
  • American History
  • World Problems/Civics
  • In addition to the Social Studies credit requirements, all students must study Washington State History and Government.  The High School Transcript will indicate "MET" if the student has completed this requirement

 

• Fitness — 1.5 Credits 
  • 0.5 credit must be from PE 1

 

• Health — 0.5 Credit
• Visual and Performing Arts (VP Arts) — 1.0 Credit
• Career and Technical Education (CTE) — 1.0 Credit
• Electives — 7.0 Credits
  • 2.0 World Language credits are typically required for admission into college/university

Course Description Guide

There are four (4) graduation requirement areas; Credits, Graduation Pathway, High School and Beyond Plan, and Senior Project.

The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) for Washington state describes this requirement as follows:  "High School and Beyond Plans (HSBP) are a state graduation requirement designed to support students’ career and college exploration throughout their secondary education experience. Students must have a HSBP to guide their course choices and document their progress and achievement to prepare for postsecondary education or training and careers."

The High School and Beyond Plan requirement is met through a series of activities completed throughout Grades 7 - 12 primarily during the Advisory course.  

There are four (4) graduation requirement areas; Credits, Graduation Pathway, High School and Beyond Plan, and Senior Project.

To meet the Graduation Pathways requirement students must complete one of the following options in either section below:

Section 1:  The following pathways must be met in English and Math separately   

• Pass the State Assessment — The Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA)
• Successfully complete a Dual Credit or Running Start Course
  • The course must earn the student 1.0 credit 
• Earn a qualifying score on the standardized tests for college — The SAT or ACT

 

Section 2:  When met the following pathways meet the requirement in both English and Math (at the same time).

• Career and Technical Education Sequence (CTE)
  • Complete 2.0 credits in a CTE program area
• ASVAB Testing
  • Have an AFQT Section Score = 31

Course Description Guide

There are four (4) graduation requirement areas; Credits, Graduation Pathway, High School and Beyond Plan, and Senior Project.

To meet the vision of graduating all students career, college, and life ready, Sunnyside School District requires that students create and present a culminating project.  The project is completed with in the Senior Capstone class where a focus is placed on career search and preparation, Senior Presentations and personal finance.
